(Before I officially begin this post, let me see that it is good to be home, surprise, surprise...)
Louisa May Alcott's book Little Women has popped up in my reading and viewing pretty much ever since I can remember. GranBeth confiscated a copy of it once while she was babysitting me, because she said it was "too old for me." (I was four and had pulled it out from its position of propping up one corner of Cara's playpen. Of course I couldn't read the whole thing, but I could pick out words and such.) To my relief, Mum restored the book to me, and I read at least a portion of it every year for years afterwards, actually only reading straight through it when I was twelve or so. I remember watching the old movie once, and the new one several times when it came out....
Anyway, Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy made deep impressions on me. The male characters, however, never interested me much. Laurie was all right when he was little, dumb when he was older. Prof. Bhaer was way too old for me to consider him a person much.
Then last week at Fairwood, Shannon and I pulled out the library's copy to read aloud. (We'd just finished Oedipus Rex and were in sore need of something warm and cheery.) Shannon said something about liking the ending, and I promptly agreed with her. Prof. Bhaer was right for Jo. He was older, yes, but he was a good kind gruff scholarly sort, and not too old to be romantic by any means. How could anyone think differently? How could anyone not love that chapter, "Under the Umbrella"? To our surprise, Nate H., who was passing through at the moment, thought quite differently. He thought that their marriage was a terrible ending, that Jo threw herself away on an old geezer. (!)
The discussion then turned to Laurie. I hold him in a sort of friendly contempt. He was a good kid, but basically wasted a whole lot of his life being stupid. Shannon liked him, "He's just like all boys"....hmm. Nate fortunately was right on this one and said to look for better things than poor Laurie!
Today, Cara brought up the subject. She asserts that Jo was ridiculous to not marry "Teddy," and that the only reason he turned bad was that Jo rejected him. Mum also had way more sympathy for him than I. (We had a veritable fight at the dinner table over this.) I maintain that Jo was too good for him and never even loved him in the first place, and that even if she had, they would not have been a very happy couple. Laurie didn't mature as fast as she did, or he stopped, or something. The Bhaer was a man, someone she could look up to (yes, dangling prep.). Plus, Christian Bale plays Laurie, and who would want to marry him?
What say you? I don't believe it had ever occurred to me that anyone would actually see the story any other way, so I'm interested to hear what others think. (And I'm honored if you actually read my blog after all this time!)

I like the Mr. Baehr in the newer movie. Doesn't seem like an old man. As for the book, well, it was a bit of a disappointment, but I think Amy and Laurie were well suited to each other.
You don't like Christian Bale? Out of the whole post, that is what stuck in my head. I don't remember him in LW, so maybe that is why you don't like him. I am basing my impressions off of Batman Begins, and he just rocked in that.
And it has been so long since I read LW that I can't even remember what I thot of it...
Bria thinks the reason I like Laurie is because I think Christian Bale is cool...but that's not all. I thought he was such a nice guy, just right for Joe. I haven't read the book in a while, so most of my opinion is based on the movie, but I think that Joe was selfish in saying that a marriage between them wouldn't work because they both had hot tempers! Aargh. And I still think that if she'd actually said yes to him he would not have gotten in all that mess. If she really didn't love Teddy, then that's fine. But I've always had the impression that she did love him. It never seemed like she fully loved Baehr, but I guess there's no real way of knowing. I despise Amy for taking Laurie, but it all seemed to work out pretty well in the end. Maybe when I read the book I'll be more satisfied, but the movie makes me so unhappy.
And how much older than Joe is Baehr? I think like fifteen to twenty years. Another thing Bria and I "discussed."
I think I had a crush on Laurie when i read the book.
THink I was disappointed when she went for the Professor instead...all very unsettling stuff...
What fun to have you back on your blog! And an interesting subject.
I really like Laurie when he was young and I wished that Jo had married him. And I agree with Cara that I think Amy was a brat for taking him although, in the end I think it was okay. Also, I'm not sure if the marriage between Jo and Laurie would have worked, even though I wanted it to happen. He was very much a boy when he asked her and although it may have worked, I don't think it would have been easy. And she did love Bhaer.
Who knows really... I should reread the books so I can have a good idea of what really happened because I'm mostly just remembering from the movie.
I guess a lot of it is like real life though... things don't go the way we think they should and everything can't always be perfect. Also, this way it's a more life-like story like it's based on.
very interesting! I think you can argue either way depending on your own personality, or preference. Some people are more interesting in the security and maturity that Prof. Bhaer represented, and some would be more romantically inclined toward the Laurie type. I think Jo, who was in some ways very mature, would still end up needing the steady emotianal support that Prof. Baer could provide, while Amy (a twit and a blonde, but a nice girl with a good grasp on reality) would keep the volitle Laurie on an even keel. That is my two cents.
But on the other hand, if L.M. Alcott had married Jo off to Laurie, I would probably have thought it was a perfect ending. The words of Katie are ended.
Ryu, I am not sure why I don't really like Christian Bale. He did do a good job in batman, but even so...
Hooray for all the input from everybody! I'm sure LMA would be flattered by the attention.
My two cents (although a bit belated) is that you should read Jo's Boys (the next in the series). It will (hopefully)answer all your questions as to who was really the better match for dear Jo.
well for starters laurie in the beginnging (when he first met jo)mentioned amy,so you could tell he already had feelings towards her.
